Wolverine Packing Co. of Detroit has recalled approximately 167,277 pounds of ground beef products due to potential E. coli O157:H7 contamination, following multiple illness reports in Minnesota.
The recall affects both fresh and frozen products distributed to restaurants nationwide. The fresh products have a “use by” date of November 14, 2024, while frozen items are marked with a production date of October 22, 2024.
The contamination was discovered after the Minnesota Department of Agriculture alerted federal authorities about several illnesses. Fifteen individuals in Minnesota reported becoming ill between November 2 and November 10, 2024.
“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in restaurant refrigerators or freezers,” stated the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. “Restaurants are urged not to serve these products”.
The affected products bear establishment number “EST. 2574B” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Health officials warn that E. coli O157:H7 can cause severe symptoms including dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, typically appearing 2-8 days after exposure.
Restaurants in possession of these products are instructed to either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase. The FSIS continues to work with Minnesota health authorities to investigate the outbreak.
